Typography Essentials: 100 Design Principles for Working with Type by Ina Saltz minimizes the descriptions of its principles while offering some good examples of type and design. This is from a series of books that includes Universal Principles of Design (definitely worth the read). The text may be short, but thinking about the ways you could apply the principles results in some endless mind-wandering, there's some great stuff in here. Although not thoroughly detailed, this book is hard to put down with its great visuals.
